Singapore Film and Microdrama Funding Guide
Singapore film and microdrama funding is project-specific support for eligible screen development or production, rather than an automatic subsidy for using AI. Match the story, applicant, format and intended audience to the current call. Prepare a rights record, realistic budget and representative scene; distinguish an announced initiative from an application that is open.

Format reference: the October 2026 IMDA–TikTok announcement envisaged 50–100 episodes of 1–3 minutes. IMDA’s TAP Film route defines a feature as at least 70 minutes. A 9:16 short serial and a feature-length film therefore need different funding and distribution questions.
For Singapore filmmakers, it helps to separate two objectives: financing a particular screen work and developing a repeatable technical capability. They need different briefs, evidence and potential support routes.
Singapore film and microdrama funding: what support exists?
The IMDA–TikTok Microdrama Programme was announced on 1 October 2026. CNA reports a first cohort involving professionals from 20 accredited companies, with live-action and AI-enabled animation tracks. This is relevant to a microdrama producer, but the announcement is not evidence that every company can apply now or that a client can subsidise a commissioned video. Confirm current participation, costs, selection and rights directly with the organisers. AI Studio is not claiming programme accreditation or a funding allocation. CNA: programme announcement
| Your project | Route to investigate | What to verify before planning around it |
|---|---|---|
| An original microdrama series | IMDA–TikTok programme | Current cohort access, applicant criteria, deliverables and support terms |
| A short film or microfilm | SGIFF SEA-SHORTS | Current call, filmmaker and project eligibility, and treatment of AI-assisted work |
| A commissioned scripted series | IMDA TAP TV | Commissioner or platform interest, eligible spending and the actual project category |
| Screen content with international reach featuring Singapore | Singapore On-Screen Fund | Singapore setting, distribution, credited local talent and qualifying costs |
| A studio's internal AI workflow | Relevant business-support route | The implementation outcome and eligible activity, separately from the film budget |
IMDA's TAP TV page requires a Singapore-registered applicant, adoption of the Tripartite Standards for Media Freelancers and evidence of commissioner/platform interest or commitment. It describes up to 50% of qualified spend for SMEs and up to 30% for non-SMEs, subject to per-episode and overall project caps. Applications may follow a call/commissioning route; this does not make an uncommissioned vertical series eligible. IMDA: TAP TV
STB describes the Singapore On-Screen Fund as support for globally reaching screen productions that feature Singapore and engage local media enterprises. Its page also identifies a separate Regional Film & TV Fund. A Singapore-style AI background alone does not establish eligibility; seek a project-specific answer before including funding in a budget. Mediacorp's First Frames: SG60 is useful historical context for vertical storytelling, but that call closed on 14 February 2025. It should not be advertised as an open 2026 grant. Mediacorp: original call
Start the creative work with how to create a microdrama in Singapore or how to make a standalone microfilm. A strong story brief and a funding application answer different questions.
Singapore film and microdrama funding routes to examine
IMDA's Talent Accelerator Programme supports development of Singapore media talent and selected productions. Its film guidance describes first features and co-production categories, with creative, commercial and talent requirements. Selection runs through specific calls for proposals. IMDA: Talent Accelerator Programme IMDA: TAP support for film projects
IMDA defines feature films for its TAP film grant as at least 70 minutes. Its 2026 film CFP table lists two calls: #1 opened 30 April and closed 29 May; #2 dates were marked tentative (29 June to 20 July). Both windows had closed by 28 October 2026. Check IMDA for any later call before treating a window as open. The grant covers specified first-feature and co-production categories with detailed track-record, citizenship/co-producer, distribution and financing requirements; an episodic vertical series does not qualify as a feature merely by adding episode runtimes. IMDA: TAP support for film projects
The SGIFF Film Fund is a separate, foundation-backed route, not an AI business grant. Its current SEA-SHORTS and SEA-DOC call is scheduled for 5 November to 5 December 2026. Documentary support in this cycle focuses on post-production. Check the fund's project and applicant rules before treating it as suitable for an AI-assisted work. SGIFF: Film Fund

Distinguish three kinds of project
| Project | Main outcome | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| A standalone film or series | A finished screen work reaching an audience | Script, team, budget, financing and distribution plan |
| A production-workflow improvement | A repeatable change in how the studio works | Current process, measurable bottleneck and implementation plan |
| A proprietary AI technology product | A novel technical asset with commercial potential | Technical differentiation, development milestones and customer need |
One company may pursue all three, but the scopes and expenses should remain identifiable. A model subscription used to make a film does not turn the film budget into software research. A prototype for an internal production system does not prove that the resulting content has distribution demand.

What belongs in an AI-assisted film proposal?
Story and audience
Explain the protagonist's objective, what changes during the story and why a viewer will stay. Name the intended audience and release format. A 9:16 microdrama for mobile viewing needs a different viewing proposition from a festival feature or a branded short.
Creative responsibility
Identify who is responsible for writing, directing, performance decisions, editing, sound and final approval. Describe AI as part of the production method. Do not replace a credible team plan with a list of tools.
Rights and provenance
Maintain records for reference material, scripts, music, voices, likenesses and third-party assets. Ask the fund and intended distributor about their AI-related requirements. A vendor's commercial-use terms do not settle every right in the input material or final film.
A budget with revision work included
Allow for visual development, rejected generations, editing, dialogue correction, sound, subtitles, delivery and quality control. A cost-per-generation figure is not the cost of a finished sequence. Keep estimated workload separate from work already completed.
A believable proof of execution
Use a short representative sequence to demonstrate the hardest requirement: recurring characters, emotional dialogue, a specific location or sustained action. A montage of attractive unrelated shots does not show that the team can tell a coherent story.

Show continuity before claiming scale
For a Singapore family drama, a useful sample might follow the same two characters through a conversation, a reaction shot and a later scene. Review facial identity, costume, voice, eyelines, props and emotional state together. The test is whether the sequence feels continuous, not whether each image looks impressive alone.
Our AI microdrama production page explains the production discussion, including story development and recurring-character control. Any grant enquiry should remain separate from the creative approval of that sample.
Once a route is plausible, plan the production with the future of AI filmmaking in Singapore, the AI video model comparison and the AI movie tools workflow.
Questions about AI and film funding
Are AI-generated films automatically excluded or included?
Do not assume either. Read the current fund rules and seek a project-specific answer where the production method affects eligibility, talent requirements or rights.
Can a brand advertisement use a film fund?
A commercial video brief and a screen-content funding call can have very different objectives. Check the programme's definition of eligible content; do not describe ordinary campaign production as an eligible film without evidence.
What should we discuss with AI Studio first?
Bring a story idea, intended audience, format and the hardest scene. Contact us to explore a production approach and a representative sample scope. Funding approval, if pursued, remains with the relevant programme.
Does a microdrama announcement mean applications are open?
No. An announcement can describe an intended initiative without publishing an application route. Check the administrator’s current call, applicant rules, deadlines and permitted formats before preparing an application or representing a project as eligible.
What rights information belongs in an AI-assisted film proposal?
Document the source material, scripts, character likenesses, music, voices and generated assets used in the proposed production. Record permissions and relevant tool terms, and check any additional requirements of the fund, commissioner and distribution platform.
How we assess Singapore film and microdrama funding
- Classify the project as commissioned marketing, original screen content or a business capability project.
- Check the official programme scope and date before considering its funding conditions.
- Prepare story, rights, team, distribution and budget evidence for the programme owner to assess.
Which Singapore film and microdrama funding route fits your project?
Begin with the intended audience and distribution route. An original series and a brand campaign can use similar production tools while belonging to different funding categories. AI use alone does not establish eligibility.
