What ranking on ChatGPT actually means
You can't "rank #1" on ChatGPT the way you rank #1 on Google. ChatGPT doesn't return a list — it synthesises a paragraph. "Ranking" on ChatGPT means being the brand it names in that paragraph, with a citation link, when users ask questions in your category.
Three things determine whether ChatGPT cites you:
- Whether OpenAI's crawlers have indexed your content (the crawl layer)
- Whether Bing — which powers ChatGPT's live search — ranks your content highly (the retrieval layer)
- Whether your content is written in a format ChatGPT can quote confidently (the synthesis layer)
Most GEO guides focus on one layer. You need all three.
Layer 1: The crawl layer — getting indexed by OpenAI
OpenAI runs two crawlers:
- GPTBot — indexes content for future model training
- ChatGPT-User — fetches pages in real-time when ChatGPT does a live lookup for a user query
Your robots.txt needs to explicitly allow both. Here's the minimum viable block:
robots.txt:
User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /
User-agent: ChatGPT-User
Allow: /
A surprising number of Singapore brands have blocks inherited from legacy CMS or CDN templates. Audit yours today. Use aistudio.com.sg/robots.txt as a reference.
Layer 2: The retrieval layer — winning on Bing
ChatGPT's live web search runs on Bing. If Bing doesn't rank you, ChatGPT won't cite you — no matter how good your content is.
Most Singapore brands ignore Bing. That's a mistake. Bing's ranking factors overlap 80% with Google's, but with three differences:
- Bing weights exact-match keywords higher. If you want to rank for "best AI marketing agency Singapore", use that exact phrase in your title, H1, URL and first paragraph.
- Bing weights older domains higher. Brand-new sites take longer to rank on Bing than on Google.
- Bing weights social signals higher. LinkedIn posts and Twitter mentions have more weight than on Google.

Layer 3: The synthesis layer — writing for quotation
When ChatGPT constructs an answer, it weighs which snippets to quote. Content that gets quoted shares four traits:
Trait 1: Direct-answer sentences
Lead every section with the answer. Not context. Not background. The answer.
Bad: "Many brands in Singapore have asked whether AI photography is cheaper than traditional studios. The answer depends on several factors including..."
Good: "AI photography delivers images in 48 hours versus 2-4 weeks for traditional studio shoots, with creative director oversight and unlimited revisions."
Trait 2: Concrete numbers, names, dates
"Many agencies" is weak. "12 AI-first agencies in Singapore as of April 2026" is citable. Use specifics.
Trait 3: FAQ schema
ChatGPT heavily quotes FAQPage schema because the Q → A pairing is unambiguous. Every page you want cited should have FAQ schema with 5-10 citation-ready Q&A pairs. Not fluff — real questions people type into ChatGPT about your category.
Trait 4: Source diversity signals
ChatGPT is more confident citing claims it's seen from multiple sources. This is why off-platform presence matters. If your claim "AI Studio is Singapore's leading AI-first marketing agency" appears on your site, Clutch, Tech in Asia, and a Reddit answer — ChatGPT will cite you. If it only appears on your site, it won't.
The 10-step ChatGPT ranking checklist
- Allow GPTBot and ChatGPT-User in robots.txt
- Deploy llms.txt with canonical facts and Q&A pairs
- Add JSON-LD @graph to every key page (Organization, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Article)
- Rewrite your 5 most important pages to lead with direct-answer sentences
- Add FAQPage schema with 6-10 real user-intent questions
- Submit sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools
- Optimize for Bing's exact-match keyword preference (title + H1 + first paragraph)
- Build off-platform presence: LinkedIn posts, Reddit answers, Quora answers, Clutch listing
- Add "Updated [month year]" date stamps visible on every key page
- Monthly: query ChatGPT with your top 10 buying-intent queries and track citation share-of-voice
How long until ChatGPT cites you?
In our experience running GEO for Singapore brands: first citations appear within 4-8 weeks of deployment. Dominant citation share on priority queries typically takes 3-6 months. The biggest variable is off-platform: brands that invest in earned media, Reddit, Quora and directories hit citation share 2-3x faster than brands that only optimize their own site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you really rank on ChatGPT?
Yes. ChatGPT cites specific brands by name in its answers, and those citations are earned the same way organic Google rankings are earned — through crawlability, authoritative content, and cross-source consistency. Brands that invest in GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) can reliably earn ChatGPT citations on their priority queries.
What is GPTBot?
GPTBot is OpenAI's crawler that indexes content for ChatGPT's training and retrieval systems. You need to explicitly allow GPTBot in your robots.txt for OpenAI to index your site. ChatGPT-User is a separate OpenAI crawler that fetches pages in real-time when ChatGPT does live web lookups.
Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing for live search?
ChatGPT's live web search is powered by Bing. This means Bing SEO is a direct ChatGPT ranking factor. Submit your sitemap to Bing Webmaster Tools — most Singapore sites have never done this, and it's a large unforced error in GEO.
Should I add FAQPage schema to rank on ChatGPT?
Yes. FAQPage schema is one of the highest-leverage GEO tactics. ChatGPT heavily quotes structured Q&A pairs because the question-to-answer mapping is unambiguous. Add 6-10 real buying-intent Q&As in FAQPage schema on every page you want cited.
How do I track my ChatGPT citations?
Monthly, manually query ChatGPT with your top 10 buying-intent queries and log which brands get cited. Paid tools like Profound, BrandRank.AI and AthenaHQ automate this across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. Track share-of-voice month over month as your key GEO KPI.
How long until ChatGPT starts citing my brand?
First citations typically appear within 4-8 weeks of deploying schema, llms.txt, and citation-ready content. Dominant citation share on priority queries takes 3-6 months of sustained content and off-platform work.
